- 44 H 6 60 W cm (image); 54 H x 69 W cm (frame) - Signed and dated (1967) lower left - Inscribed verso - David Boyd was a prominent Australian figurative painter and sculptor who famously developed a unique 'sfumato' painting technique, involving candle smoke; he was also the subject of a vintage newsreel by British Pathé which highlighted this fascinating artistic method - to see this amazing technique, and the way this very work was created and in action, please see - https://www.britishpathe.com/asset/38351/ - In Nancy Benko's 'The Art of David Boyd' she notes how Boyd was at a cross-roads [...] as he wanted to paint London scenes for which, he felt, some sort of breakthrough was needed - The liberating effect of his discovery of sfumato could be seen by comparing the two paintings of the Soho Strippers, one before the sfumato discovery, and one after sfumato was developed...the sfumato appears to make the card players or pot smokers go right out into that limbo, which was [Boyd's] intention; she further notes 'Boyd is probably the first artist to use the carbon in a candle flame as a direct method of drawing. He feels that it still has great potentialities which he has yet to discover.
