McDONNELL DOUGLAS 2793 STOVL FIGHTERAT, Mfr. Ames Research Center, Mdl. 000, dim.: 102" x 41" x 56", est. weight: 200 lbs. This is an advance vector thrust supersonic short take off and vertical landing STOVL concept that was designed in the early 1980s. It was derived from the successful Harrier aircraft. This wind tunnel model was built by Dynamic Engineering Inc under subcontract to McDonnell Douglas It was tested in the Ames 9 by 7 Foot Supersonic Wind Tunnel at speeds ranging from Mach16 1250 mph to Mach 24 1900 mph. Test results showed how the jet plumes interact with the airframe aerodynamics and what effect they had on the overall drag, Three different model configurations were tested three surface this model canard wing horizontal tail off and wing horizontal tail canard off This model was part of a NASA research program in which many supersonic powered lift concepts were investigated The lessons learned from this research influenced the designs of later VSTOL vertical short takeoff and landing fighter aircraft such as the Joint Strike Fighter F35The part of the research program involving this model was conducted by Ames aerospace engineers Don Durston 1Lt James Sculerati John Schreiner and Doug Pea of the Aerodynamics Division Model mechanical work during tests was performed by Bruce Gilbaugh and display preparation was done by Manuel Escamilla and Ruben Flores of the Technical Services Division Aircraft Design Specifications Single engine Capable of inflight thrust vectoring for enhanced maneuvering Designed for deck launched intercept mission 400 foot takeoff distance at 42000lb gross weight Maximum speed Mach 18.
