Bin 389 is often referred to as ‘Baby Grange’, in part because components of the wine are matured in the same barrels that held the previous vintage of Grange. First made in 1960, this was the wine that helped forge Penfolds reputation with red wine drinkers by combining the structure of Cabernet Sauvignon with the richness of Shiraz. The 2018 vintage is a blend of 57% Cabernet Sauvignon and 43% Shiraz from McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Padthaway, Coonawarra, Robe, and Wrattonbully. Matured for 12 months in American oak hogsheads (38% new), some previously used for Penfolds Grange. Warm, dry growing season; late flowering and delayed veraison slowed harvest, with a warm, dry autumn providing excellent ripening and fruit quality. Wine Analysis: Alc/Vol: 14.5%, Acidity: 7.1 g/L, pH: 3.59. Last Tasted: March 2020. Peak Drinking: 2023–2050. Part of the "Curated Fine Wine Collection :: Feat. Pinot Noir" sale on Grays.
