Pannell Adelaide Hills Barbera 2016 is an incredibly vibrant, joyful expression of this Northern Italian variety, thriving in the cooler elevations of South Australia. The bouquet bursts with an expressive and layered perfume of dark cherries in kirsch, wild mulberries, and boysenberries, subtly complexed by hints of smoky paprika, toasted hazelnuts, and savoury walnut bread. On the palate, this medium-bodied red shines with the variety’s trademark bright, crunchy acidity, which imparts a wonderful zeal and drives the succulent fruit flavours across the tongue. Lacking the heavy, drying tannins often found in other regional reds, it possesses a supple, soft frame that highlights its juicy, moreish drinkability, closing with a clean and exceptionally fresh, fruit-driven finish.By comparison, the S.C. Pannell Adelaide Hills Nebbiolo 2016 delivers a more structured, beautifully classical interpretation that nods directly to traditional Piedmont. It opens with a highly perfumed, classic nose of redcurrant, sour cherry, and sweet rosewater, intermingled with complex savoury elements of fennel bulb, terracotta tiles, cedar, and light tobacco. The medium-bodied palate showcases a magnificent purity of fruit, supported by a perfect, unashamedly firm balance of natural acidity and tightly wound, powdery tannins.
