A highly praised cool-climate Victorian Chardonnay, crafted by renowned vigneron Mark Walpole using fruit from both the estate vineyard and the historic Smiths' Vineyard (the oldest remaining vines in Beechworth, planted in 1978).The 2022 vintage was a cooler and damp growing season. Regular rainfall events throughout the entire 21/22 season kept temperatures mild; and prevailing east and north-east winds provided higher humidity, preserving aromatics and contributing to softer tannins than normally the case in wines from the Fighting Gully Road vineyard. Aroma: White stone fruit and white flowers prevail, with a hint of underlying spicy oak. This is backed by complex regional nuances of grapefruit, nectarine, dried honey, and an alluring hint of struck match. Palate: Textural, rich, and medium-weighted. It displays pure layers of white peach, citrus pith, and mineral notes. The wine foregoes malolactic fermentation to retain a fine, tight acid line, finishing long with roasted cashew, biscuity nougat, and a flinty persistence. Part of the "Curated Fine Wine Collection :: Taste of Summer" sale on Grays.
