This is a reflection polariscope made by the Photolastic Division of Measurements Group (Raleigh, North Carolina, USA). This package is pretty cool. It will probably be best used as a curio as there is probably some electronic unit at 17.57 times the cost that does the same job. But hey, I didn't ever hear of the Photolastic division of the Measurements Group before I looked at this. When somebody asks about you get to use words like 'birefringement' in a sentence. (Very impressive) The foam needs to be cleaned out so let's hope you have an intern. Did not see a model number or serial number. A reflection polariscope is an optical instrument for photoelastic stress analysis (also called the PhotoStress method). A special birefringent plastic coating is bonded to the surface of a test part or structure. When the part is loaded, the coating experiences the same surface strains. Polarized light from the polariscope illuminates the coating; the reflected light is viewed through an analyzer. This produces colorful fringe patterns (isochromatics) that visually show the magnitude and direction of the principal strains/stresses across the entire surface. It allows both qualitative full-field visualization of stress concentrations and quantitative measurements (often with a compensator attachment).
