What Humvees Sell For
Across 34 whole-vehicle Humvee sales at U.S. government auctions in the 12 months to October 2026:
| Winning bid | |
|---|---|
| Median | $5,775 |
| Middle half | $4,130 to $7,525 |
| Lowest | $1,725 |
| Highest | $12,000 |
30 of the 34 were 1985-1994 models, mostly M998-series trucks. They sold in 17 states, with the most in Alabama and Missouri. The top sale was a 1992 utility Humvee in Arkansas.
These Humvees came from fire districts, sheriff's offices and public works departments that received them through federal surplus programs and later retired them. Some come with a state title, which makes them easier to register than a Humvee bought straight from the Department of Defense.
GovPlanet Humvees
The Department of Defense sells Humvees to the public through GovPlanet, run by Ritchie Bros (RB Global). The first public sale, in December 2014, sold 25 Humvees for $21,500 to $41,000, an average of $29,760. GovPlanet does not publish current averages.
What is different about a GovPlanet Humvee:
- Paperwork. It comes with an SF-97 marked "off-road use only," or other document options, each with a fee. See the SF-97 explained.
- End Use Certificate. You must be approved before the vehicle is released. GovPlanet says this takes 6 to 10 weeks.
- Buyer's fee. About 15% on items up to $10,000 and 10% above, plus a card fee if you pay by card. Confirm on the listing.
- Condition reports. Lots marked IronClad Assurance come with an inspection report and a refund or repair remedy if the vehicle differs materially from it.
Our guide to buying surplus military vehicles covers GovPlanet, demilitarization and the End Use Certificate in detail.
Can You Register a Humvee?
Humvees were not built to civilian road standards, so states treat them differently. These are the states with a documented position:
| State | Road registration |
|---|---|
| California | No. Off-highway registration only, per the DMV and the Air Resources Board. |
| Florida | Restricted. GovPlanet has warned that Florida is not issuing titles to Humvee buyers holding an SF-97. |
| Kansas | Not with off-road SF-97 paperwork, per 2018 legislative research. A 2021 bill proposed an inspection route. |
| Idaho | Yes, with conditions (2018 law). |
| North Carolina | Yes, with a sworn statement on federal safety standards (2017 law). |
| Kentucky | Yes, with an inspection and proof of safety standards. |
| Virginia | Yes, with military surplus plates, not for general transportation (2018 law). |
Nebraska, Nevada and Texas are also reported to allow registration with conditions. For any state, call the DMV before you bid and ask what it will do with the exact paperwork on the listing. A Humvee from a city or county that already has a state title is usually the easiest to register.
Before You Bid
- Check the paperwork on the listing: state title, SF-97, "off-road use only," or bill of sale.
- Check that it is demilitarized. Armor, weapons mounts and restricted parts are removed before sale.
- Plan transport. A Humvee is 7 feet wide and about 5,200 pounds empty. Most need a trailer or a tow.
- Parts. Parts are plentiful and many are sold as military surplus themselves.
