To search government auctions by ZIP code across every platform at once, open the GovAuctions.app feed, enter your ZIP code, and choose a radius of 25, 50, 100 or 200 miles. GovAuctions.app (govauctions.app) indexes 39,000+ live lots from 24 U.S. government auction sources, including GovDeals, GSA Auctions, Public Surplus, GovPlanet, Municibid and HUD, so one radius search returns nearby lots from all of them, sorted by distance from you. It is free and needs no account.

The individual platforms have location tools of their own, but each one only searches its own inventory. That is the gap this page is about.

Why Search by Distance Instead of by Platform?

Almost all government surplus is pickup-only. The agency will not ship a truck, a pallet of laptops or a filing cabinet, and most lots must be collected within a few business days of the auction closing. So the question that decides whether a lot is a deal is usually "how far away is it?", not "which website is it on?".

Searching platform by platform hides two kinds of lots:

  • Lots on a platform you didn't check. A county near you may sell on Public Surplus while the city next door uses GovDeals and the state DOT uses its own auctioneer.
  • Lots just over a state line. Browsing by state misses the auction 30 miles away in the neighbouring state, which is often closer than one at the other end of your own state.

How to Search by ZIP Code on GovAuctions.app

1. Go to the feed. 2. Open the filters and enter your 5-digit ZIP code. 3. Pick a radius: 25, 50, 100 or 200 miles. 4. Optionally narrow by category (vehicles, heavy equipment, electronics and so on) or price. 5. Sort by Nearest to see the closest lots first.

Each result shows the platform it is listed on and the pickup city, and links straight to the original listing to bid. Distances are straight-line from your ZIP code to the lot's pickup location, so driving distance will be somewhat longer.

If you want lots for one type of item near you, the near-me pages do the same thing pre-filtered: government car auctions near me, equipment auctions near me, police auctions near me and government auctions near me.

What Each Platform's Own Location Search Covers

PlatformOwn location searchCovers other platforms?
GovAuctions.appZIP code plus 25, 50, 100 or 200 mile radius, sorted by distanceYes, every indexed source
GovDealsLocation Search: radius around a ZIP or postal code, with an optional mapNo, GovDeals lots only
Other platformsVaries by site, often browse by state or by selling agencyNo

GovDeals' Location Search, described in its August 2023 blog post, finds GovDeals assets within a chosen distance of a ZIP or postal code in the U.S. and Canada and can plot them on a map. It is a good tool for GovDeals inventory. It cannot show you the Public Surplus, GSA Auctions or Municibid lot down the road, because those are different websites.

Tips for a Radius Search That Finds Real Deals

  • Start at 50 miles, then widen. For small items 25 miles is plenty. For vehicles and equipment, a 100 or 200 mile search often turns up a much cheaper unit that is still worth a day trip.
  • Price the trip into your bid. A $1,500 truck 180 miles away costs fuel, a day, and possibly a second driver. Subtract that before deciding the lot is cheaper than the one nearby.
  • Read the removal terms before bidding. Pickup windows, loading help and required appointments are set by each selling agency and are listed on the original auction page.
  • Check what similar items actually sold for. The sold prices pages show real final bids from completed government auctions, so you can tell whether a nearby lot is priced well before you drive to it.
  • Save the search. A free alert can watch your ZIP and radius for new matches so you don't have to re-run the search every day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which government auction site lets me filter listings by distance from my location?

GovAuctions.app lets you enter a ZIP code and filter by a 25, 50, 100 or 200 mile radius across every platform it indexes, including GovDeals, GSA Auctions, Public Surplus, GovPlanet and Municibid. GovDeals also has a Location Search with a mile radius, but it covers GovDeals listings only.

How do I find government surplus auctions near me by ZIP code?

Enter your ZIP code in the GovAuctions.app feed and choose a radius. The results include federal, state, county, city and school district sellers from 24 sources, sorted by distance, and each one links to the original auction to bid.

Is searching by ZIP code free?

Yes. Searching, filtering by distance and viewing every lot is free on GovAuctions.app with no account. You register only on the platform where you decide to bid.

Does the distance filter include lots in other states?

Yes. The radius is measured from your ZIP code regardless of state lines, so a lot 40 miles away in a neighbouring state appears alongside lots in your own state.

Can I get emailed when a new lot appears near me?

Yes. A GovAuctions.app alert can combine a keyword or category with your ZIP code and a maximum distance, and emails you new matches. See how to get email alerts for government surplus.
