Presidential Dollar Coin Proof Set Benjamin Harrison was the 23rd president of the United States, serving from 1889 to 1893. A Republican and grandson of former president William Henry Harrison, he supported protective tariffs, modernizing the Navy, and expanding veterans’ benefits. During his presidency, six states joined the Union. John Tyler was the 10th president of the United States, serving from 1841 to 1845. He became president after William Henry Harrison died, making him the first vice president to assume the presidency following a president’s death. Tyler supported the annexation of Texas, but clashed with Congress over his policies. James K. Polk was the 11th president of the United States, serving from 1845 to 1849. A Democrat, he expanded U.S. territory through the annexation of Texas and the Mexican-American War, which brought much of the present-day American Southwest under U.S. control. Polk kept his campaign promises but left office in poor health and died shortly afterward Zachary Taylor was the 12th president of the United States, serving from 1849 until his death in 1850. A career Army officer and Mexican–American War hero, he opposed the spread of slavery into new territories. He died in office after becoming seriously ill, and Vice President Millard Fillmore succeeded him.
